Macramé

My first macramé wall hanging I made with my good friend Isabella. She is the inspiration behind my creative journey and also the founder of twome and the #12craftsin12months.

She wasn't teaching back then. She was half way through her creative journey and I loved asking her what she had learned and what she was making when we met at work as we worked in the same office. And finally one day I decided to ask her if she would like to teach me macramé.

She agreed and she came over to our home with my partner at the time and we spent the whole day in the garden just sipping on coffee and knotting. Was a lovely summer day and I enjoyed it so much.

It wasn't until sometime later that I got involved with macramé again. I was asked by a business to create some coasters for them and so I got back into learning the basic knots. I followed Isabella's free tutorial and  created the cutest little macramé coasters. Her tutorial is easy to follow and the results so satisfactory as you can see below!

My next macramé project was a mini tutorial to my mother. She loved the coasters too and she is a very skilful crocheter and knitter. You can check out some of her designs on her instagram page. So I decided to teach her how to knot in case a big order did come in, she would be my little helper. We didn't have any cotton rope so we used t shirt yarn instead. I quite like the style. She was an ok student...a bit defiant but you know what they say, your most challenging students are the best lesson!

Finally, during one of our many walks along the beach with my little boy (bulldog), Lincoln, and we found a really cool piece of driftwood and I felt inspired. Having watched some wall hanging tutorials, I wanted to make a more layered design.

I love macramé! It's as simple as a knot but also as complicated as a knot. There is a process behind preparing your pieces, measuring the lengths and then deciding on which knot to use for your design. I like to plan but I also l like to improvise in the moment and just let my design unfold.

I followed Melissa's from the craft ginger youTube tutorial to create my wall hanging below. I named it Hera because well, I like to name my creations and Hera was the goddess of women, marriage, family, and childbirth in Ancient Greek religion and myth, one of the Twelve Olympians. I think it was close to Mother's Day in the UK or maybe just my broodiness taking over the naming process.

Hera is actually for sale in my Etsy shop so if you happen to fall in love with her and just cannot live without her hanging by your side, then just click here!
