Marble Carving in Naxos

It all started when…

we decided we wanted to do something different on our holiday. I love searching for new fun things and was on the airbnb website and was going through the experiences section only to come across Maggie’s Marble Carving in my Garden. We were already in an explorative mood that day as we embarked on a road trip around the island. We drove from the South all the way to the top tip to visit an ancient Kouro and the plan was that on the way back we would meet up with Maggie to have our marble carving workshop.

I was very surprised that Rob was up for this but very excited so questioned it no more. Maggie gave us a meeting point in one of the villages and there was no signal so this meeting felt very 90s. She then opened the back of her pick up truck, told us to jump in and hold on and off we went on this off road, bumpy drive across dry Greek land to her “garden”.

The location was absolutely breathtaking, rows of olive trees and just chunks of marble everywhere. All you could hear were the cicadas and some farm animals. It was so serene and magical and in the heart of nature. Neither of us had imagined this and we both smiled. Maggie let us choose our stones and then we went back to our stations, hand made, custom stations her husband had made for this purpose, under the shade of olive trees, where she showed us some basic carving techniques and off we got to practising while she went to fetch some home made lemonade.
